Banff National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world for photography. With turquoise lakes, dramatic mountain peaks, peaceful forests, and breathtaking viewpoints, there is no shortage of incredible backdrops for your photos.

As a Banff and Canadian Rockies photographer, I have photographed couples, families, weddings, and visitors throughout the Bow Valley. Some locations are iconic, while others offer a quieter and more intimate experience.
Here are 12 of my favourite Banff photo locations in 2026.
1. Two Jack Lake
Two Jack Lake is one of my favourite photography locations near Banff. Located just a short drive from the Banff townsite, it offers beautiful views of Mount Rundle, calm water, and a peaceful Rocky Mountain setting.
The lake is especially beautiful during early morning or around sunset, when the light can create stunning reflections on the water. On the right day, you may even catch the soft pink and purple colours of alpenglow on Mount Rundle.

It is also one of the more convenient mountain locations for visitors who do not want to travel far from Banff.
2. Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka offers a completely different scale from many of the smaller lakes around Banff. The long lake is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, creating a wide and cinematic backdrop.
While the main areas can become busy during the summer, there are quieter sections along the shoreline that can work beautifully for photography.

The combination of open water, mountains, forest, and rocky shoreline gives us plenty of variety during a photo session.
3. Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is one of the most iconic locations in the Canadian Rockies. Its bright turquoise water and the Valley of the Ten Peaks create an unforgettable backdrop for photography.
This location is particularly popular for:

However, visiting Moraine Lake requires more planning than it did in the past. Access and transportation arrangements should be considered when planning your photo session.

Lake Louise is another world-famous photography location in Banff National Park. Surrounded by towering mountains, glaciers, and the historic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, the scenery is spectacular throughout the year.
During the summer, the turquoise lake creates a classic Canadian Rockies backdrop. In the winter, the frozen lake and snow-covered mountains offer a completely different but equally beautiful setting.

How to Choose the Best Banff Photo Location

If you want an iconic turquoise lake, Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, or Peyto Lake may be the perfect choice.
For beautiful mountain reflections and convenient access near Banff, consider Two Jack Lake or Vermilion Lakes.
If you prefer dramatic viewpoints and wide mountain landscapes, Mount Norquay Lookout or Sulphur Mountain can create a completely different look.
For a more relaxed and versatile photography session, Cascade Ponds and Cascade Gardens are excellent options.
