Behind the Lens: Why Shooting Events in Banff Inspires Me

For me, being an event photographer in Banff is never just a job. It is a constant source of inspiration and a deep connection to the mountains I call home.
Recently, I photographed a conference featuring Dr. Dale Leckie, the renowned Canadian geologist famous for his work on Alberta and the Rocky Mountains. As I moved around the room capturing the event, I found myself completely captivated by his presentation.
Connecting the Science to My Own Footsteps
Dr. Leckie explained the fascinating geological processes behind local potholes and how Lake Minnewanka was formed. Hearing the ancient history of a lake I visit so often gave me a profound new appreciation for it.
The highlight, however, was when he discussed Mount Edith Cavell in Jasper National Park.
This wasn't just a slide on a screen to me—it is a mountain I have actually hiked. Standing in the back of the room with my camera, hearing a world-class geologist dissect the structure of a peak I had conquered with my own two feet felt surreal. I felt an immediate, powerful connection to the lecture.
Why This Matters for My Clients
That afternoon, I walked away with much more than a memory card full of photos—I left with a deeper understanding of the landscape I work in every day.
This local knowledge is something I love passing on to my clients. When I’m on set guiding a corporate group or capturing a VIP retreat, being able to share the real story behind places like Lake Minnewanka adds an extra layer of connection and value to their experience in the Rockies.
